In the "Tips for Guzzi's" section of the September, 2000 issue of the
MGNOC news there was an article on treating aluminum with Sodium
Silicate to prevent oxidation and staining. This calls for coating the
parts to be treated with the chemical, washing it off after 20 minutes,
and baking in the oven at 275 for 30 minutes. I have disassembled
everything on my Eldo restoration and have done the above on most of the
parts. I will not be able to say whether this works until the bike is
back together for a while, but the author of this tip swore by it. I got
one gallon of sodium silicate in the correct concentration from a
chemical supply house called "The Chemistry Store" which you can access
online.

when they get really nasty. The bike doesn't leak, so I assume the oily

film comes from the breather box. Works great, but rinse with plenty of

water (under pressure is better) and be VERRRRRY careful to not get it
on
any painted parts. Probably don't want to use this more than once a
year or
so.

OK guys, it's time for me to start thinking about putting my
transmission back together. Before I do, I want to get the aluminum
housing into top cosmetic condition. Presently it has some staining from
gear lube, battery acid/battery tray rust, road tar, and a few other
things I can't quite identify. Any suggestions as to how to get all this
stuff off and have the case come out looking factory new?

I have tried Eagle Mag Wheel Cleaner (Formula B) with limited success as
there is still a fair amount of staining on the rear cover. I was
thinking about bead or plastic media blasting, but another friend of
mine tried it and his castings still look blotchy. Hmmmm....what next,
boiling in lye?! Paint? Oh for the days when every good industrial
maintenance shop had a 55 gallon drum of carbon tetrachloride!
