This bloody oil thread comes up on every motorcycle list at least every
6 months.
Picky, persnickety purist types will recommend this and that and in the
end, you usually just go back to what you always used.
The Loopframes are old, synthetic oil wasn't even around when they were
designed and thus don't need them.
Regular oil has improved by leaps and bounds since the 60's-70's. Any
decent 20-50 will work. Just make sure you change it regularly as most
Loopframes don't have filters. I change mine every 1000 miles and use
whatever is on sale at Costco. The one oil I stay away from is Penzoil.
If you want to buy yourself a false sense of security, go ahead and dump
$16 worth of synthetic in your crankcase. It will be just as dirty
after 1000 miles as $4 worth of Castrol 20-50.
Your bike is out of warranty. You can use what you want.
Cheers,
Dave
