Karl,

Does the rattle come at different constant speeds with no acceleration? In
different gears? If it is only at high speeds could it be some kind of valve
flutter? Piston slap? If you pull the clutch as the bike is making the noise
does the noise remain?

I had a similar noise coming from my left valve cover intermittently this
summer. It was really beginning to concern me. It seemed to only do it at
certain rpms though. Turns out that it was a loose mirror. Believe it or
not. Somehow the noise appeared to come from the engine. Strange but true.

I guess I am telling you this because noises are like leaks on a roof. They
can appear to come from one place but be starting in a totally different
place.

I'll be interested in hearing what you learn.

Good luck....Ian

I have a 71 Ambo that is giving me fits. When I am running down the
highway at around 60-70 mph a loud racket (sounds like detonation) comes
from the right valve cover. If I accelerate it goes away but as soon as I
level off my speed the noise returns. I have check the valve clearance,
changed the points, cap, & rotor as part of a recent tune up, changed the
distributor springs, and checked the timing the timing. No change. I have
even went out on a back road and loosened the distributor and played around
with advancing and retarding the timing but know mater where the
distributor was the noise was still there. It only appears when running at
high speeds.

The only thing I can think of is the distributor is worn, possibly the
points cam, but what is strange is as long as the bike is under
acceleration there is no noise. If it is the distributor you would think
it would make the racket at full advance also. I was even think about
swapping out the heads with an extra set I have for my Eldo, just to try
that angle.

I believe the bike has around 30,000 miles. I have owned it for 6 years
and prior to my buying it, it sat in a shed for who knows how long. Any
ideas ?
