Hey Keith,
Good idea on trying to sort the problem without tearing the front end
apart..
One thought is that it might be worth going to all the effort now to deal
with the steering since once you do it will be the last time likely for the
next 30 years.
Guzzi was notoriously known for under greasing the bearings and after 30
years there would not be very much left in there. I remember when I
restored my bike the grease in the bearings was so old and dry that it was
what was causing the binding in the bearings.
I go back to what I was saying earlier that if there were grease nipples
then you could just pump in new grease and then proceed with your procedure.
Just some thoughts I wanted to share.
Regards...Ian

Hey Peter, Glad to see you hear! Before ripping apart the front end, try to loosen up the head bearing nuts, move the bars left to right to loosen things up a bit, then re-torque to specs. My Guzzi mechanic did this to my 71 Ambo and it seems to have relieved 90-95% of the notchiness. It still has just a click or 2 at dead center, but nothing like it was - used to click throughout the entire side to side range, not anymore. Mechanic seems to feel the little that is left may work itself out, at least worth a try before tearing the whole front end apart! Good Luck! |
