Actually the drum brakes work okay for highway riding which is what I do most.

Interesting. I tried a little experiment after reading your post. I took
the instruments that came off the bike, and gave them a sharp twist. The
spedo needle moved signifigantly less than the tach needle, which bounced
a great deal.

What are you doing to make it stop? The brakes seem to work OK, but the
amount of stretch in the front brake cable is truly amazing and not very
confidence inspiring.
