Hi Bruce,
I think those shims are for shimming the crown wheel on the rear drive.
They fit between the large flange and the housing. There are two
different styles (drum brake and disc brake) and come in the thickness
you mentioned. They never wear out and typically cost $10 - $13 each. I
believe these statements hold true for all but the newest of the big
twin models.
