Hi Keith,
I use a cross pattern starting with the upper left long stud, torquing
it to 15 lb.ft. The cross to the lower right and torque it. Afterwards,
the upper right, then lower left. Finally, the upper short one (down in
the hole, 12 o'clock position) and the lower short one (nearest the
sparkplug). Then repeat the sequence, torquing each to 30 lb.ft. I let
them sit for a day, then go back and do it all again - the gaskets do
compress somewhat in that short period of time.

I've been using a K-D brand ring expander meant for small engines
(lawnmower). It doesn't quite open the up enough for easy installation,
but you should be able to find a better one at NAPA or any of the chain
auto parts places (I've seen the "Lisle" brand in JC Whitney too). I
usually stagger the rings with the oil ring gap at 12 o'clock and the
other two 120* around from that. Don't know if it really matters, but I
try not to align any of the gaps with the piston pin holes. Cheers,

I am humbly asking for some advice on two things. First, does anyone
have the proper torque sequence on the bolts? I found the spec at 29
pounds, but the sequence seems to elude me.

Secondly, I saw here somewhere that I will need to stagger the rings, is

that simply a random stagger, or is there a strange pattern that must be

followed in order to have them seat properly? And I also read where some

folks broke the rings when installing them on the piston, is there a
particular tool for this job?
