Check to see that the nut on the back of the output shaft is TIGHT. If
loose, it can cause these symptoms and great internal damage. You have
to pull the swingarm to do check and tighten this, but that's not
difficult.
It's hard to get in neutral, and slips back into gear if it's in neutral. Also makes some scary clunks when I'm braking hard with the clutch pulled in. Otherwise, it shifts through the gears just fine. I've got no space to take it apart myself.
