That makes sense, anyone have a die? For now I will try the smaller tap
to clean both.

I used a brass wire brush. The threads in the tubes are steel- the fork

cap is aluminum and its' threads are what gets cleaned out.

Also-they are the same size/pitch threads as on later models. At least
it's the same as my G5 fork caps (although the design is different so
you can't use late model caps).

Might try to clean up the threads with a smaller 1.0 tap. Use it like

 thread file, but as I can't really see anything obvious, I don't have
high hopes for that idea.
