Last week I replaced the split boot with the new OEM style boot. Pulled
the swingarm and everything seemed to be in order, nothing out of the
ordinary nor installed incorrectly. Took her for a test drive and she
was slightly weeping at the front of the boot, but noticed I had
slightly kinked the boot with the new thin style clamp. I re-seated the
clamp but never had a chance to test ride again last week. Since then,
I installed the new distributor spring (used 2 small ones), statically
timed her again, and replaced the new oil pressure switch with another
new one as the previous one sprung a leak at the top of the body (thanx
MG Cycle for the free replacement!). Took her for a short 30 mile test
run today. She fired right up, and ran freaking awesome! I was about
waiting for something bad to happen because she was running that good.
Got her back in the garage and checked the boot. Dry as can be! So,
I've got the leaking boot squared away, but in the back of my mind, I am
still wondering why I am getting gear oil in there. Is it drive oil
(which I think it is since when I check the rear drive oil level it was
slightly low twice before) or can it be tranny fluid leaking through the
seal (which seems like a good candidate but when I checked the trans oil
level it was perfect twice). Should I be concerned that over time there
may be mass amounts of fluid in that boot that can wreak havoc somehow?
