I have to chime in here. I wrote a Guzzi Doghouse article in the
newsletter years ago about this. Lea and I loaded the G5 up like a wagon
and headed for the Blue Ridge Rally. Stopped near Athens to visit with
John Hoffman. Right about this time the clutch would just disengage
whenever it wanted to, it seemed. John and I looked it over and couldn't
find anything wrong. Then, after much head-scratching he said "Both of
you get on the bike." When we did, the weight of us plus the camping
gear forced the swingarm and suspension down to where the u-joint boot
clamp kicked the clutch lever in. The obvious solution was not to
overload the bike but it was too late for that so we spun the clamp
around and had a great trip in spite of floods and tornadoes and
lightning. Seemed worthy of mentioning here in this discussion.

Keith, nothing personal, but how much do you weigh? And can you confirm that you have original length shocks? While driving, your shaft housing should be angled down and to the rear. Too much load or short shocks means the angle is down toward the front and oil can then migrate and hang forward. Patrick Hayes Fremont CA
