Pulled the swingarm today, checked it all out, didn't see anything wrong
other than a missing paper gasket between the swingarm and pinion. Put
it back together, also replaced one of the distributor springs, and took
her for a spin. Rides fine, boot was not leaking from the rear side
(swingarm side) but was just slightly oozing a bit of oil from the front
side of the boot by the tranny after a 10 mile ride. I noticed the new
thin style hose clamp was slightly off center pinching the boot a bit
towards the tranny side, so I re-seated it. Hope it works. I'm
guessing now that perhaps the trans seal is leaking. My receipts from
the PO show that it was replaced not long ago, but perhaps she is
leaking again. Funny thing is as I check the trans fluid, it is always
right where it should be but the rear drive was always low. Go figure.
As long as oil doesn't spill out all over my rear wheel, I'm fine with
migration or a slight trans seal leak, I'll just keep an eye on the
fluids. One thing I do plan to do is to vent the trans fill plug. Mine
does not leak now and Mark checked that little plug thing underneath it
while at the national and it was perfectly clean. Perhaps the trans is
building up pressure and forcing fluid out the rear seal into the
driveshaft boot? Don't know but I will see if I can drill that plug and
add a vent and tube to let the trans breath better.
Mark E,
That rear drive fill plug did indeed breath both ways. Cam stopped over
while I was wrenching and gave it a good blow and it worked better from
inside out than from outside in, but you can blow air threw that valve
both ways, so I can leave that plug as is. The distributor spring went
in too easy, so easy that I kept checking it and poking it with a
screwdriver to make sure it was on. I statically timed it again and she
runs good. Thanx for the advice.
