In my quest for valve guide liners- I found an alternate source for
valves, guides, springs, push rods and tappets. They stock loop parts,
or can get them within a few days. I just ordered a set of valves and
guides for a new Eldo motor I am working on- and will probably end up
ordering new Ambo guides as well.
the guides were $11 each and valves at $41 each- the valves are Black
Diamond coated valves
The distributor is called Engine Dynamics in Santa Rosa, CA at
707-763-7519. they also do top end work on guzzis including porting and
flowing, standard valve job, etc etc although I do not have any
experience with their machine work.

New question, different motor. I am working on a friends Ambassador- my very broke friend on a shoestring budget. Needs valve guides replaced - he was burning oil- I did a compression tests and it was fine, took off the heads and the valve surfaces look fine, but when I took them out they are too loose in the guides- checked the stem taper and it is Ok too (checked the specs in the book, don't remember off hand)- anyway, if it were me I would get new valves and new guides from MG Cycle and be done, but that is also about $300 for both sides. One suggestion from an auto guy was that is the taper is good, to ream the existing valve guides and insert guide liners- I priced the liners and they are about $10 for 4 and talked to an automotive machine shop that quoted $100 to ream 4 existing guides and install the liners and trim them. Anybody ever done this? Now, the other thing is that I don't know the history of this engine, but from the condition of the valve surfaces, this seems to be premature valve guide wear- which would lead me to believe there is a problem with the rocker aligment somewhere- or is it possible that poor valve clearance adjustment could cuase this as well? Or maybe someone just put in new valves with old guides last ime? near Berkeley, CA '72 Eldo '74 Eldo '95 1100sport '73 v7sport project |
