I was out for a ride on my G-5 Sunday. I had ABATE businness to take
care of in Wickenburg. I took off about 8:00am as I wanted to atrtend
the MMA's swapmeet and buffet breakfast. It was a good turnout dispite
Sat. night's rain, and everyone hung over from the nighttime NASCAR race
at PIR.
I saw a few friends, bought a few goodies(had too! swap meet rule) and
had a nice breakfast. As I got on the bike and headed towards
Wickenburg, I looked at the horizona and saw some left over rain clouds,
that seemed to be hanging right over my destination, so I decideds to
ride back home and grab some rain gear. At my exit of the freeway, I saw
a triker sitting along the breakdown lane. Pulled over and asked
"Wassup"? out of gas. Be right back, I said. I gassed up my bike and a
small gascan I picked up from home, and returned to the biker. Gave him
the gas, and he got his trike going right off. Cool trike too. Stroker
V-dub engine pushing 2200cc and BIG carbs.
So I go back home, gets my rain gear and head back out. This time I
decide to go a different way, as the weather is nice, and I have alot of
time before the meeting. So I head west. I go 50 miles west of Phoenix,
turn of at Wintersburg and take the Vulture Mine Road to Wickenburg.
This is anice two laner that runs thru some scenic mountains. On the 33
miles of road, I saw just two cars, both going the other way!
After the meeting, I decide to go home the same way, as the roads thru
Wickenburg were packed with travelers comeing home from the big Laughlin
River Run. So, back I go. Now this is open range, and there are several
cattle guards on the road. I was tooling along about 60, when I crossed
one of these cattleguards, and, BLAMMO! I hit that thing HARD! Holy
Cr*p! I slowed down abit too see if I could feel any differece in the
bike, at all. I didn't so I kept on. I should have stopped.
The cattleguard chewed about an 8" chunck of rubber out of the tire. I
had just put this tire on mayby two months ago, to ride to California. I
ran all the way home duing about 80! I didn't know anything was wrong
till I was pulling off the freeway and coming to a stop, when I felt a
bump-bump-bump coming from the rear. I said to my self, I must have bent
the wheel.
I pulled off into a grocery store parking lot and put the bike up on the
stand. I spun the tire to inspect the rim, and when I saw the piece of
tread missing, I bet I turned white as a ghost! I made the sign of the
cross, thanked Jesus for getting me home, and swore to allways stop and
inspect the bike after ANY incident!!
