I too am an advocate of burping...
the rear drive that is! Well, away from easily disgusted any other
burping too! Seriously, I've burped the rear drive on every Guzzi I've
owned and it seems to help keep the lube inside (except on those with
sealing problems).
One caution on magnetic plugs - make sure you don't have any clearance
issues before installing, such as hitting the ring gear in Ambo rear
drives. Just my $.02 worth.

All this being said, I do think it is important to 'burp' the rear drive after the gear oil is changed. Take it out for a ride long enough to heat up the gear oil (just feel the case to see if it is warm) and then remove and replace the filler plug. You'll probably hear the hissing sound and you may need to do it once or twice. My reason for recommending 'burping' is because I think it cuts down on excess pressure. As for the large magnetic plugs, I use them on the engine drain, transmission fill, and rear drive fill plugs. All three of them collect some particles - which I remove when I change oil. |
