Jason et al, And... to add to what Jason says, EFI also really doesn't
require adjustment like carbs do. Thus, they make human intervention less
of a necessity and isn't that what "Progress" is all about??!! :>)

I don't think carbs are inherently better. You just find F.I. on
modern, higher horsepower machines. It takes more gas to get that kind
of horsepower, and the F.I. is more efficient about delivery, so it's a
wash.
I get ~ 40 mpg on my 40 hp eldo, and I get about 35 mpg on my V11 sport
that has about 2X the hp. My toyota prius does better than either
one....
And I agree with Kev- 5-10 mpg- considering the variations in
speedometer accuracies- is probably not significant.
