Wait until dark and then fire it up. This way you'll be able to see any
electrical discharges easily. Sort of like a light show....

There is spark on the inside of the cap between the rotor and the
cylinder contacts. If a crack is present the spark will jump to it as
the shortest way to ground. The clear coat fills the tiny cracks and
prevents this. Give it a try and see if the problem goes away. You can
always try turning off the lights and firing up the bike and watching
the cap. Sometimes you will see a cool light show if the cap is bad enough.
