Pulled Junkyard down off the workstand Saterday afternoon, after
completing the Spring maintenance; tires, wheel bearing service,
radiusing the front brake shoes to the drum, oil change, and installing
a clutch/flywheel assembly (with new 4mm clutch hub) from an 1100 Sport.
Took it for a 70 mile ride & I'm all smiles! The extra 2 clutch springs
don't seem to make any noticable difference in lever effort, and the 6
lb diet in rotating mass has the engine responding like a 2-stroke. I
was worried that it would loose the smooth idle & perhaps want to stall,
requiring a bunch of carb adjustments - not at all! In fact, it seems to
idle better, smoother than before; the only carb adjustment I made was
to turn the idle speed screws out to lower the idle speed. Shifting is
now much quicker, not having to wait for the engine to slow down, and
gear changes are made with a lot less crunching if rpm aren't matched
perfectly. Acceleration, especially in the first 3 gears, is a lot more
brisk. The only place I notice a slight difference is while trying to
accelerate from below 2000 rpm in 2nd gear & above, which never was a
smooth operation - easy enough to avoid that situation, especially with
the easier shifting made available with the light weight set-up.
It should be noted that the new clutch/flywheel replaced the OEM 850T
assembly, which I understand is significantly lighter than the Ambo &
perhaps the Eldo assembly. All I can say is "Light is Right"!
