Because the two cylinders are not directly opposite each other. One
sits slightly forward the other slightly aft. IIRC, the left sits aft.
Both connecting rods ride together on the same crank journal.
Therefore, they can't be in line, one has to sit beside the other. The
rod position determines the center of the cylinder bore and the center
of the head.
