AJ > its important that frame and engine # match. That said if you have an important bike--series 1 LeMans,v7sport,MV Agusta 750 America, etc etc you want these #'s to match. If you got a regular eldo, ambo, convert etc these #'s dont matter a bit.On my bike a v7sport the frame has no # because the second owner removed the vin plate in 1974 when he chromed the frame. All these years my bike has been registered as vk^ 9104 which is stamped in the steering neck. The motor #vk*32241 is not used. I contacted various sites and tried to buy a new vin plate. They are available but are not nos but repops that are close but not identical to the real thing. About 2 years ago I got a phone call from Bob Marinelli the guy who chromed my frame and I learned about the history of my bike from the day it was first originally sold by King in Brooklyn. One of my first questions to Bob was - did he have the original vin plate ?? He did and now I have it. In 2002 me and the bike got ran over as I sli
d under a Honda Accord. The only chrome framed v7sport in the world was wrecked including having the frame twisted in ungodly ways. I purchased a frame from OWLSTEW and have just had it chromed. I will afix to the steering neck the original vin tag vk*32241 and that bike will roll again................KO

Hi,

Here's my second stupid newbie question.

Since I started lurking, wow 2 1/2 years ago! I've noticed dozens
of posts
about this tool. What is the need to remove the VIN plate? The
only thing I
can think of is prepping to paint/powder coat the frame. Some
posts imply
replacing it with something other than the original VIN plate? On
my TLC
list, when this topic comes up, people start crossing their
fingers to ward
off this evil subject. For that list, VIN plates are never, ever
touched,
tampered with. Is there a difference in VIN plate tinkering
between
motorcycles and cars/trucks?

Very curious.

Thanks, I'll go back to lurking now.
