ok, so i was pricing out air compressors this last week (mine is just
not cutting it..) and i've come to the realization that they're awfully
expensive.
the plan:
build a ratty yamaha xs650 motor into a 10+cfm@90 psi compressor.
i have a 80 gallon compressor tank laying around..
after much thought, instead of fabbing up a new head for it:
plug the plug hole, remove cam chain. remove valves
fab intake side with check valve (in) and air filter
fab exhaust side with check valve (out) to cut out switch/tank
drive crankshaft with 5hp motor/pulley. (maybe using tranny as gear
reduction?)
cool with big fan.
spin it at 1700-ish rpm
the math:
theoretical cfm=(c.i.d.*rpm)/3464
19.43 cfm=(39.6*1700)/3464
i'm assuming compression of 130-150 in the head..
total materials needed:
4 check valves
1 pressure cut out switch.
1 relief valve
1 5hp motor (230/1)
1 regulator
2 intake filters
1 line filter
various fittings to plumb motor to tank.
am i crazy or will this work?
would a 5hp compressor spin this? if i used tranny as gear reduction,
and put it in 5th gear, i would think 5hp would be enough to turn it over?
would there be a ton of oil in the air?
it seems like an ineffecient, single stage compressor to me. am i
missing something?
