Greg,
It may be sufficient, but there is no harm in adding it in. The D- screw is there for a reason, so why not add that little bit of insurance. I added mine in after my little regulator problem just to be sure.

Isn't is plenty sufficient for the generator to ground through the
bracket to the engine block? I'm not doubting you here, just curious.
