Bob,
I had similar symptoms last spring, I replaced the regulator and the
symptoms repeated. In my case it turned out to be a lousy ground on the
regulator. The ground wire ran to a toolbox/rear fender bolt and the
connection had loosened up (my own fault, I wired it and neglected to
use a star washer at the ground contact point). I bought a second new
regulator and ran the ground wire to where the negative battery cable
connects to the battery tray. The problem hasn't repeated. I'd check
all the other related connections while you are at it.

Recently replaced my old regulator. The charge light was staying lit and not charging the battery. When took old reg. apart, contacts were welded together(twin coil type, small winding coil with NO and NC contacts and the NO contacts welded). After a 100 + miles started having same problem again. Checked reg. and have same problem. Is this a generator problem or is there something defective in my wiring that is causing arching in the regulator? Any suggestions appreciated. Brushes worn? I am going to remove the generator and give it a good look. Anyone running an Alternator setup? BOB |
