Subject: VMD 2005 Swapmeet price increase

Dear VMD Swapmeet Vendors, We in the AMA Special Events Department appreciate your concern regarding vendor pricing at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. Normally, we refrain from discussing the internal business policies of the AMA with our clientele, but this subject probably warrants some additional background. The vendor price increase has been long overdue, because for quite some time, these spaces have been substantially under priced. And although the costs the AMA incurs to produce Vintage Motorcycle Days (VMD) have risen every year, we have continued to hold the line on vendor space price increases until now. During its most recent meeting, the AMA's VMD Committee recommended that we must more accurately price the vendor fees, with the intention of holding the line on further cost increases for as long as possible. Comparing VMD vendor prices to any other swap meet is not a realistic comparison because AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is the largest vintage motorcycling event in North America and arguably the largest in the world. In 2004, nearly 1,000 swapmeet vendors attended VMD. Let's break down the vendor costs. Typical swapmeets charge $40 to $60 per day for a 10' X 10' indoor space. Outdoor meets may provide a larger space for the same price. The total non member cost per day for VMD 2005 is $58.33. The member cost is $50.00 per day The overall cost to attend and be a vendor at VMD has been steady at $90 for the last five (5) years. That $90 fee included weekend admission for two adults (and all children under age twelve were and will continue to be admitted free), a 20' X 20' space, a camping permit at that space, access to free, hot showers, and additional overflow parking if needed. Let's break that $90 vendor space figure down to its cost per element: Two admission passes: $60.00 Weekend camping: 25.00 20'X20' vendor space fee: 5.00 Total: $90.00 What this shows is that anyone attending VMD as a non-vendor would pay $60 for two weekend passes and $25 for a camping space. If you were attending VMD as a vendor, we have basically been giving you your space for a total of $5.00 for the entire three day weekend, which breaks down to only $1.67 per day! Our updated 2005 VMD vendor cost breakdown is as follows: Two admission passes: $70.00 ($60 for AMA member) Weekend camping: 25.00 20'X20' space vendor fee: 80.00 ($65 for AMA member) Total: $175.00 As you will note, even if you are NOT an AMA member, your $80 vendor fee is only costing you $26.67 per day, which is still extremely reasonable. One other important fact to note is that the purpose of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is to raise operating money for the non-profit Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum. Most folks don't realize that over half of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum's annual income comes from VMD proceeds. Joining or renewing your AMA membership will not only make you eligible for the VMD vendor space (and included weekend admission) discount, but most importantly, you will be helping to make sure that motorcycling, both modern and vintage, will continue and grow in the United States. We hope you will take a closer look at the overall value of AMA vintage Motorcycle Days and join us again in 2005 and for many years to come! Sincerely, Will Stoner Director, AMA Special Events 614-856-1900, ext. 1227 wsto-@ama-cycle.org
