Hi Turo,
There are four bearings in the final drive: The large ball bearing, the
small needle bearing, and the two taper roller bearings. All of these
bearing should run smooth. The large ball bearing and the small needle
bearing can simply be replaced. The two taper roller bearings can be
replaced but must also be shimmed properly to obtain the proper preload.
MG Cycle has the shims (http://www.mgcycle.com/reardrive.html) and Pete
Roper's how to guides on guzzitech
(http://www.guzzitech.com/RearDriveTear-Pete_R.htmland
http://www.guzzitech.com/RearDriveTear2-Pete_R.html) do a great job
explaining how this is done. The good news is that unless something (a)
was not set up right to begin with or (b) has gone awry and torn up some
of the shims - you should be able to put the same preload shims back in
and be just fine. Just keep careful track of which shims are the preload
shims (the ones that go between the two taper bearings) and which shims
adjust how far the pinion goes toward the center of the crown wheel (the
ones that go under the gear at the end of the pinion).

My final drive bearing assembly feels like it isn't as smooth as one "might" perceive it should be but this might be normal. Can anyone clear me up on this?
