FYI the coil I ended up buying for the Ambo project was a Borg-Warner E-81
(made in USA!). I just got a brief upside-down glance at the Borg-Warner
book at the auto parts store, but the applications for this gem filled a
page & included all the early 12v VWs. It is slightly larger in diameter
than the stock coil, but a few minutes w/a small rattail file enlongated the
clamp bolt hole in the mounting bracket enough that it could be used to
mount the new coil. The length is the same, so the fit is nearly perfect.
The high tension outlet "nose" of the new coil is longer, so you'll need a
different rubber boot. I found one in my bag of old plug wire "stuff"
{according to my beloved wife "junk" that I should have thrown out long
ago!).
