Hi Bob,
I used a regular M8 bolt with 1.25 thread pitch to make a pin. Others
have made oversized pins and reamed the hole in the block to fit tightly
(look for the Tip on www.classicguzzi.com from Gary Cheek/Jesse Open).
For the length I measured the depth of the hole it fits into and the gap
between the generator and the block in the "saddle" area. This should
give you the length for the unthreaded portion of the pin. The threaded
part should be long enough to use all of the available threads in the
generator. Might take a little work with a file/grinder/etc. to get it
to fit good in both gen. and block. The original has a screwdriver slot
on the top (bottom?) to facilitate installation. Don't make it all
threaded - the pin won't tighten up in the generator and it may wear out
the hole in the saddle even worse. You may have to clean up the threads
in the generator with a tap to get the pin to screw in properly. Don't
run the tap in too far though, you might damage the field coil windings.

There should be no gap between the generator and the cradle/saddle area.
Measure the gap between the two (modeling clay would work good here) and
make a shim of the appropriate thickness out of aluminum or steel sheet
(as others has mentioned the shim should have a hole for the pin and is
usually about 1"w x 2.5"l) Trial fit the generator in the bracket to
check for fit - if the shim is too thick the generator won't set in the
bracket properly, too thin and there will still be a gap. I've used JB
Weld as a stop-gap measure to fill in any grooves worn in the generator
by the bracket or saddle. After everything fits to satisfaction, I put a
dab of JB Weld in the hole for the pin and put it all together. A little
Locktite on the pin where it threads into the generator wouldn't hurt
either. Just my $.02 worth...

I have seen some posts mentioning a locating pin? My generator has a
threaded hole on the bottom side of the generator, where it looks to
mate up to the "cradle". Is there supposed to be a pin in the generator
to sit in the hole in the cradle? If it is supposed to be there, what is

a good replacement, what is the correct thread/bolt size for this hole?
Is the generator supposed to physically come in contact with the cradle?

Should I put sometype of rubber gasket between the metal?

Thanks

BOB
