Jason,
Will be interesting to hear how you make out with your fix.
My White Eldo has convinced me that the engine needs to come out one more
time (that will make it three times dealing with this grabby clutch issue).
Why now you all ask? Well....I was determined to ride that bike till
something failed. My logic was that at that point I would finally know what
the problem was with my grabby situation. Not logical...I know but it is
what I decided to do.
Well....after riding about 50 miles ( I have put 500+ miles with this
problem) the clutch decided not to disengage at all by the time I got home.
This apparently only happens when the bike gets warm. When the bike is cold
the clutch acts perfectly normal.
My thinking is that the intermediate plate warps and essentially closes any
free space between the clutch plates. Of course this feeds on
itself...increasing the heat as they rub and makes things worse. At any
rate....I got home...turned off the bike, put it in gear and pulled the
clutch....engine acting as if it was fully engaged. Left it overnight...went
out in the morning...pulled the clutch with the bike in gear and it worked
perfectly.
Any thoughts on this? Has to be in the clutch assembly. I think an
intermediate plate because it is the thinest pice of metal.
Of course I will let you all know what I find out...Ian
p.s. I have 4mm spline with bonded clutch plates.

Not even very subtle. $0.25 history- my bike was shuddering into gear as I let out the clutch- felt bad and sounded worse. Ian and myself and others came up with some pithy and subtle possiblilities including a warped intermediate plate. The reality is somewhat more pedantic. I have the transmission out of my bike, the clutch taken apart, and I mean really apart. The *riveted* clutch plate came to pieces. As Mark says on his website: Bonded Clutch Plates, The Best. Hmmm. I guess we need to add to that: Riveted Clutch Plates, The not-so-best. Good news is there is no harm apparent in the housing. Now I have to decide what to replace. The RAM clutch looks mighty inviting.
