Hi Zebee,

I think this is the first time I have seen you post to this list
(although I remember you from Euro-Moto). So, welcome!

I don't have a manual here with me, but the timing should be pretty
straightforward. The timing marks are on the crankshaft pulley. From
memory (that could be dangerous), there are 3 marks TDC, static or idle
speed, and full advance. The marks are I believe for the left (or was it
right?) cylinder. It would be a good idea to consult a manual.

You could either static time it with a simple test light or multimeter,
or preferably use the strobe. I think the point gap should be 0.016".

Like David says, it would be a good idea to torque the heads and set the
valve clearances.

Good Luck,

Hi,

I've got an 850GT (Eldorado, more or less) that's been sitting in
the
shed for a fair old while. It was running when put away as I
recall,
and I want to get it running again.

I have spark, it coughs and thinks about catching sometimes, but
that's
it.

It has new plugs.
The plugs are wet after prolonged cranking but not dripping.

The battery is a big one and brand new.

The fuel is new high octane, being fed from a clean container.
It has the stock VHB carbs, running with the stock airbox and a
clean
filter. They've been taken apart and cleaned with carby cleaner
and
compressed air.
The airmixture screws are set to factory specs.

The rotor seems clean and not worn, the bits in the dizzy the rotor
turns against are clean and not worn. I've run a point file over
the
points, from what I can see the seem a bit worn but not much.

I suspect I need to check the timing and points gap, but have no
clue
how. Can anyone point me to a step by step "do this then that" for
the
mechanically clueless to check timing, and set the points?

What other things should I check and do?

Zebee
