Hello Guy
Well, in 1971 Lino Tonti designed a new LOWER and lighter frame. It
appeard 1. time on the V7 Sport, and was then used on all Heavyweight
V-twins from 1975 onwards. (Lightweight V-twins is another story).
All frames before that is loopframe (V7, special (ambo), V7 Cali, 850GT,
Eldorado, maybe more - kinda lost track here).
The loopframe, as I understand it, comes from the design of the frame.
It loops back, there's no detachable bottom frame rails etc., as on the
the Tonti frame. Therefor very robust (police, military use) and heavy!
Hope that is of some use. I realy would recommend "MG Twins Restoration"
by Mick Walker, very good reference.
Greetings from Denmark EU.
Kind regards
H. Christensen
