Hello all, I'm new to this list,

I have a '74 Eldo Police that I put together a few years ago. It has run pretty well, but I'm having the grabby clutch symptons from day 1...just like Ian Adkin's ( I searched old messages). The bike shifts ok, but the tranny has to be pre-loaded to hold 1st gear from a stop sign (a tranny, not a clutch prob I think)

The bike has the 4mm setup with new input hub and the bonded sureflex plates, and new intermediate plate. I have it apart (after 2K miles) again and am searching for a solution. The clutch engagement is abrupt and tricky to smoothly engage. When starting in gravel (my driveway) it is hard to keep it from flying. When down shifting, wheel spin is common. I get the impression the fibre disks are not hitting the steel parts squarely, causing the grabbing.

Upon inspection, here is what I've observed:

The clutch outer body has about .008" clearance to the rear tranny cover, and rocks a bit (with O-ring removed)
I thought this might be binding the rod movement...thinking about having it sleeved to tighten up the fit.

The pushrod is straight but about .040" shorter than the new one I just got from Eish. It also has some wear on the ends from the fibre bushing. I swiched to the multiple o ring setup..thought the o rings might be hanging it up in the worn area.

The splines all look ok. The clutch plates move freely on the new input hub.

Springs were seated ok (they were new when replaced)

The pilot piece (forward end of the push rod) appears to have a sloppy fit with maybe .010" side play.

These observations don't seem drastic enough to cause the problems I'm having. The last Bike I built (an old V7) had great clutch action. I'm thinking of trying the Single disc ram clutch.

Ian....any luck fixing your clutch problem?

Thanks,

D
