Hey all,
Can anyone give me some advice on the mainshaft bearing in the rr cover
of a 5 speed?
This is what I found last night:
1) the mainsaft(the one with the slider for 5th gear)bearing in the rear
cover stayed on the mainshaft when I removed it from the trans. I
removed the bearing from the end of the shaft and reinstalled it in the
cover. I see witness marks in the bore that tell me this bearing has
spun. The bearing is very easily removed from the rear cover after
reinstallation. Everything tells me that this cover is shot, unless I
bore the hole to an oversize bearing. I am hoping that someone out there
has had the same problem and can give some advice.
Keep in mind that I pulled everything out still attached to the rr
cover, then dissassembled from there.
2) the other question is: Is there supposed to be a gap in the
mainshaft? I know these are pressed together and according to the info I
have, can start to separate. I have a .025 gap. Is this enough to have
to be pressed back together or is there supposed to be a gap for oiling
or whatnot.
3) Could the bearing problem be a result of the "shaft separation"?
Thanks,
Kev
PS I found my ball........, No Brett cannot have it...
