Bob:
You're just the guy I've been waiting for to come along; I have a
friend in NZ who has a friend who wanted to buy some antique motorcycle
stuff on ebay and send it to me, since the sellers didn't want to ship
internationally. The 'few small pieces' I agreed to turned into a bunch
of small pieces, and even some front forks and a BSA engine. Most of
it's old Harley and Henderson stuff, with some Indian stuff thrown in,
it's been sitting in my garage since last summer, there doesn't seem to
be much impetus to send it to them, and I'm kinda stymied by shipping
the engine.
He's got an Eldo, goes to the rallies, and was looking for a 4
leading shoe brake a while back; we got to know each other through some
Guzzi decals I sold him some time ago, and he went to look at a 1940
Indian 741 that was for sale in NZ that I eventually bought and had
shipped back to the US. Being the only guy I knew in NZ, he lived about
an hour away from the guy who was selling the bike. Small world.
I know you won't want to lug an engine along, although it would be
interesting exercise for you, but there's enough small pieces like carb
bodies and gaskets to fill all or part of a suitcase, and probably earn
you enough beers and goodwill with bikers in NZ to make your trip
interesting. I can't remember where he lives, but he's on the south
island where you're going.
Let me know if you're interested, where you are, and when you're
leaving. If you're taking your surfboard, you might be interested in

...I just did the math, 2003 minus 1949 makes me 54 years old. Sheesh!
Never had kids, so I never had to act like an adult role model, and am
considered to be a bad influence upon the younger generation.

I don't know how international this group is, but I'll be travelling to New Zealand over the holidays and would happily buy a beer for anyone on this list who can meet up with me to talk cycles/loops. I'm spending 3 weeks with various branches of my fiances family and could probably use a break. I'll be in Auckland, Opito, Christchurch, and Wellington. Thanks, Rob Prins |
