I've had crossovers explained to me by Tom Bailey,
long time looper from Rocky Hill, CT. You'll find his
name scattered through the Tips Books...my impression
is this...
each cylinder could really use a bigger exhaust
pipe...the crossover opens up the exhaust flow to
allow this...as you move the crossover closer to the
head, you gain power (torgue, horsepower, who
knows?...) earlier in the rpms, ala the LeMans, and
more recently you saw the addition of a crossover in
front of the alternator for what, the Cal Special
Sports? My take is that it is beneficial to have the
crossovers...but if it only adds 2-4% to a loafing
loop, who is gonna notice? we aren't racing at indy,
ya know?....
