I have now installed the relined brakes on my Eldorado. I did a careful job of adjusting the shoes for full contact when installing and I lubed the brake cable. The new brakes are not as powerful as I'd like, but they are quiet and certainly stop better than the old linings which is a nice improvement. If they continue to stop as well as they do now, and don't start squealing, I will be happy.
The local shop - Brake Service of Colorado Springs - used a "242" lining which is apparently a common material made by Raybestos and others. This material was bonded to my shoes and then ground to my drum diameter.
Best of all, this job cost me the whopping total of $26.30!
While I was in the mood, I also lubed the clutch cable, and that made a large difference in clutch pull. It is a fairly new cable, but obviously needed a friction reduction treatment.
