Thank you for the replies so far.
This weekend I got curious & impatient, and pulled the head on the side in
question. One of my motives was to peek at the condition of the cylinder too.
There was quite a bit of tan crud (carbon?) deposited on the top of the
piston, and in the combustion chamber as well. The exhaust valve is pretty
caked too.
Is a brass-bristled brush a suitable implement to remove the deposits?

great, IMO. Being new at fixing old motorcycles, I have made some
incorrect diagnoses and decisions in the past, and rather than selling me
parts I don't need, he sets me straight.
