I suspect that a warped intermediate plate would show up as a tendency to
fail to fully release. A slight drag when you are stopped and difficulty going
from neutral to first at a light.
The "grab" comes from something that has a very steep change in friction as
you add pressure. Usually it is something like a contaminant on the plates.
Hence, when you heat it this stuff emerges from the plate material and begins
to create havoc.
