Interestingly enough, I tried a civilian cap on both tanks with success.
Best guess is that there is some variance to how high the filler sits
when put together at the factory. Who knows? Bottom line is that it will
work with my civ. cap. Thanks for the info. I'd still love to see a good
close-up shot of a Police filler tube, though, if anyone has one.

The taller neck has a groove also, but it is very thin and shallow
compared to the short neck with the wide deep groove.

both fillers have a groove that goes straight the circumference. They
are just different heights. I guess I'll need to try the civilian cap I
have and see if that works on this taller filler. I know the police cap
screws on but there are no grooves except the one that goes straight
around and should accept the ring on the civilian cap. I'll try it
tonight.

Correct on your thinking. Groove with shorter neck is civilian and
taller
neck is police. Police cap will work on either, but civilian cap with
spring
clip will only work on civilian tank.

I have a civilian cap but haven't tried it yet because the filler tube
on the tank with the taller tube is taped up real nice for painting and
I don't want to disturb that if someone has the answer for me. Would
some of you mind looking closely at your tank with the cap open and
check the height of the tube compared to these two?
It might mean nothing at all but after I placed them on the bench
together and noticed it, my curiousity got the best of me. Obviously.
Oh, the reason for all this is that I'm trying to choose between these
tanks before I go any further.
