Ian,
The actual amount is hard to estimate since it is spread over the tank.
My uneducated guess would be about 2 ccs or so. If I raise the gas
cap, then the gas no longer weeps as much but the filler neck seems to
be slightly damp.

Very odd. My next step is to find a air-cooled VW oil filler cork
gasket that Mark recommends as a good replacement for the cap seal ring.

Bruce,

Never heard of this. Seal ring should not allow any gas to escape. How much
gas are we talking? Maybe the vent hole in the cap is weeping gas fumes that
are condensing?

Subject: dribbling gas filler cap

I've noticed that my gas cap no longer seals well....when
the bike is
standing still....for a long time.....

This winter I replaced the old, dried out gas cap seal with
a new seal
I cut out of a sheet of Viton. The gas tank was full to slightly above
the cylinder that extends down in the the tank from the filler area.
Then I noticed, while working in the garage, that the tank was wet with
a film of gasoline. The level of the gas was nowhere near the top of
the filler cap. I eventually siphoned off enough gas to lower it below
the cylinder inside the tank which seem to stop this. I think that
capillary action is causing the gas to go up the sides of the cylinder
and then up and over the filler lip. But I would have thought that my
new seal would stop this.
