It is a safe bet that there is sludge in there. I wouldn't lose too much sleep about it though. Like I was saying in my last post, I think it rarely gets to the point where it is filled. If you need to get into the bottom end, then definitely clean it out. Of course, if it is full, then you'll probably spin a rod bearing or something, and you'll have to tear it down anyway.
