Matt,
First of all, Paul Linn's posts never show the text when I receive them
from the List. Does anyone else have the same problems with Paul's
emails? Okay Matt. Got that off my chest. The equivalent of what the
factory used for fixing these VIN plates is what we call drive screws.
Domed head little buggers with no slots, and with threads of a sort that
allow the pins to be driven into the hole but once in, not removed
(easily). They can be removed by tapping them out and otherwise
encouraging them from inside the steering head. Drilled out if they are
uncooperative. I restored a V7 Sport, and used the adhesive on the back
of the plate so that I could be "correct" from a restoration standpoint.
Not absolutely necessary but, in the event that the drive screws fell
out (unlikely) the plate would still be affixed to the frame. I think
it also discouraged illegal swappage by unscrupulous folks parting out
bikes or stealing them, or whatever. Anyhow, I have some of these drive
screws. Mine are stainless steel. The original ones were brass or some
yellow metal, as I recall. I'll send you what you need (6 correct?) if
you like. Just let me know and give me an address. Off list will be
fine.

Anybody have recommendations on what to use to reattach my vin plate to the frame neck? Should I just drill out the holes and use regular stainless or aluminum pop-rivets, or what? TIA, Matt in MI '73 Eldo - looking more like a bike! |
