It could also come from old, hardened O-rings around the studs .
Especially considering tou haven't been into the engine.

Hi Don
If oil is leaking from the breather plug/detent spring cap on the side
of the tranny it's most likely not engine oil, but trans. lube. Engine
oil would have to leak past the rear main seal (or other area), around
the flywheel/clutch assembly, then in through the trans. input shaft
seal without first leaking out the weep-hole at the bottom of the
bellhousing.

My buddy's Eldo leaked the same place, so I removed the breather plug
and drilled it for a hose barb which I soldered in place. Or you can
simply replace it with the later style that has a hose fitting already
on it (part no. 1223 5301, $8.00 from MG Cycle
http://www.mgcycle.com/trans.html). Once you have it in place, run a
hose up and to the rear and the problem should be solved. Cheers,

Charlie

Iam wondering if the oil that is coming from the oil breather plug could
be leaking from the emgine main seal?
