It could also come from old,hardened O-rings around the studs .
Especially considering tou haven't been into the engine.

Engine oil would have to leak past the rear main seal (or other area), around the flywheel/clutch assembly, then in through the trans. input shaft seal without first leaking out the weep-hole at the bottom of the bellhousing. My buddy's Eldo leaked the same place, so I removed the breather plug and drilled it for a hose barb which I soldered in place. Or you can simply replace it with the later style that has a hose fitting already on it (part no. 1223 5301, $8.00 from MG Cycle http://www.mgcycle.com/trans.html).
