Ian,
I think that I read somewhere that some people thought to put a few CC's or oz (or tablespoons?) of lube in the UJ cup area to help keep the UJ seals "moist" and kinda as an indicator if you develop a leak at the boot.
I also agree with Pete that it could have migrated up from the rear drive if the drive was elevated for any period, though doesn't the carrier bearing have seals on both sides? I suppose if you had a loose fit that could also be the cause.
I just redid the seals on my 5 speed, and there was a seal at the output shaft that should keep oil in the trans.
