Rich: I was pondering the correct front axle torque
setting myself today. It can't be 100 lbs - I recall
that when I last changed the front tire the bearing
heated up in a mile and I had to stop and loosen it.
If you find out what the correct setting is, I'd like
to know.
Charlie: I used to work for a Honda (car) dealership
removing the cosmoline from the new cares that were
shipped in from Japan (that was the summer of '83). We
used a special solvent called "decosmoline." Concise
but uninformative name. Maybe you could check with one
of your local import car dealers to find out what they
use these days. The cos. we removed was a gray-ish
clear goop. What you are describing sounds more like
the old Rusty Jones rustproofing, which is harder to
remove.
I would NOT recommend using steel wool. If you find
the right solvent, it will come off easily and not
damage the paint, I'm sure.
