Upon replacing the rod bearings on the right side cylinder on my 850 LAPD I cranked the bike and it ran well. But as it got warm, it started to knock. I managed to get it cut off on about the fourth strong knock. After that the engine wouldn't make a complete revolution without locking. Disassembly showed that the top(s) of the bolts of the piston that had the new rod bearings installed had hit the bottom of the barrel of the jug. The stroke broke a small chunk of aluminium out of the bottom of the jug that is stuck down in the block. I can't figure out what I did wrong. I have done the same procedure in the past with no problem, so I was just looking for ideas...Thanks in advance..Greg, '74 LAPD |
