Andy,
The loose/sheared bolts on the flywheel will cause a lot of
thrashin' and bangin'. The flywheel tries to maintain a constant speed while
the crank and pistons is speeding up on the power stroke and slowing down on
the compression stroke. So the fly wheel keeps moving back and forth against
the bolts, quite violently actually, which are trying to keep up with them
crank. The engine would not have had to run very long before all of the
bolts would have sheared.
Did you find why the compression was different from side to side.
Mine reads 15 off from side to side, 165 on one and 150 on the other. Runs
good, smooth as silk at 55 and again at 65. I am guessing that I am in need
of a valve job or the chrome is just starting to come off. I think the
engine in mine has never been apart except for the timing chain and only has
12K on it. I will probably start on my clutch in a couple of weeks, I am
still hoping for one or two more days of good riding.

hi, guys- as Keith has stated, the 'ol gal wasn't really sick. the old style |
bolts were only finger tight, and one of them was sheared off. there were |
few other issues, but nothing related to the weird noise that he heard [sorry!] the rings are fine, the bores perfect, the bearings check out, etc. so |
we're waiting for gaskets and seals from mgcycle. [rick is gonna put them |
the oops truck today, Keith]. still waiting for my bro to come home from camping- he has the blaster. no need for all that thanks, Keith! this is a great bunch of guys here, and a big kudos to Greg for his 50k mi. update. man, if that setscrew idea for the carrier bearing would work, that would be awesome. what a great thought! Keith wants pics, so i'm gonna snap some on 35mm for him- maybe he has |
scanner and can share, but they will be booorrringgg! [unless you can |
at my clutter- it's really bad! in fact, i gotta go replace the tarp on |
roof- it's suppose to rain wed.] :>) i'll make the preloaders for the forks, they do sag pretty easily, and replace that ancient front brake cable. should be all done by the middle |
next week, except for the run-in for the head gaskets. later on! andy shoestring motorsports :>) |
