Kev,
Guzziology, Dave Richardson, Talks about cam shimming under the
heading "Limiting big-twin cam nock" and gives part numbers for shims, but
he does not mention a target clearance. .002-.004" sounds like a good target
to me, enough to prevent friction and galling and also limit movement which
will cause minor timing fluctuation and knock.

I don't want to confuse any issue but.... does anyone have a spec (or general consensus) one the freeplay(back and forth) on the cam? I ended up shimming the one on my pals eldo. I didn't have a dail gauge so it was all done with my calibrated eyeball. It just looked WAY TOO sloppy to me. This was left over from my H-D wrenching days. I think I ended up shimming it |
acheive a .002 - .004. Still holding good so far. Anyone eles ever do |
Kev P.S. I think I have a cam if you need one Keith. It's a bit used, but hell, |
be free. P.S.S. some rat bastard stole my valve caps!!!! what the hell's wrong with |

All teeth on the gears look fine. There is some minor movement on the oil pump gear, but nothing that would cause the clatter I am hearing. Ordered up a new cover gasket and crank seal for the cover and will re-assemble. Checked the valves and they appear OK, clearance is right on the money. Did notice the left plug was blackish and slightly wet while the right one was perfect, could just be a carb adjustment on the left side. Have no clue what to do from here except hand this off to a professional. I wish somebody lived nearby who could stop by, take a listen, and tell what the clack is wrong with her. Perhaps it is the rod bearings, who knows. I give up. Keith Ruff 71 Police Ambassador - NJ |
