Robert,
For years I have gone by Michael S. Buchanan's Tune-up Guide for the
Shade Tree Mechanic. Here is the order he suggests:
1.......Valve adjustment.....engine must be cold!
2.......Generator belt adjustment....you will have the cover off to adjust
the valves.
3.......Sparkplug service.....they wont be hot yet.
4.......Air Cleaner service...I used a cleanable K&N that fit the box.
5.......Ignition Point adjustment......Take you time accuracy counts.
6.......Ignition Timing adjustment....watch the pipes if you use a timing
light, they get hot quick.
7.......Carburetor adjustment..... I use carb sticks and find it easier but
other methods may be used.
8.......Engine oil change.......Engine must be at operating temperature'
pull the pan and clean it and the screen.
9.......Transmission oil change....see Guzziology for the correct amount.
10.....Rear Drive oil change......as above.
11.....Rear brake adjustment....your back there at the time.
12.....Front Fork oil.....messy.
13.....Front Brake adjustment......I have a lot of respect for any one who
can make the drum brake work really well.
14.....Clutch adjustment....make sure there is clearance at the arm on the
back of the trans.
15.....Battery maintenance.....same as any battery.
16.....Check for leaks, tight plugs and bolts and such.
Obviously some of these items will not need attention every time you
service or tune the bike and some of them may be done in a different order
but this check list helps to make sure you don't leave out something that
should be done. Before you start determine what needs to be done and skip
the items that don't need service at that particular interval.

Let's say you want to tune up your Loop. Where do you start and where do you finish? There are procedures in Guzziology and Premier but I don't |
anything on the sequence of events. Do you start by seeing if the pugs |
brownish and then gap them? Do you then move to the valves and set them? Do you then go to timing and points and then synch the carbs?? Pray tell, Bob |
