Charlie,
Thanks for the help. Any chance you still have the "help sheet" and
a scanner so you could email me a copy. Off list of course so we don't tie
up too much band width. Also, I've heard that you get a straight cut gear
type noise with these tensioners and I hope that a "broken in" chain might
minimize that noise. Besides, I don't want to put to much money in this
engine as I have a gear type engine on the work bench waiting for a rebuild
with 88mm cylinders. From what I can see the chain has to come off, I have
tried twisting and turning the old one for about ten minutes before I had to
go to work, all to no avail.

Hi Alan,
When removing the stock tensioner, it's not necessary to plug the two
threaded holes. I replaced both the chain and the tensioner at the same time
so don't remember if you can remove the old tensioner without first removing
the chain. When installing the Valtek tensioner, I found it easiest to
remove the rubbing shoe from the pivot bracket, install the bracket, install
the chain and then reinstall the shoe to the bracket. I bought my Valtek
tensioner and master-link-equipped timing chain from Moto International and
they sent a great "help sheet" along with it. Hope this helps!

 Hello to the Group,
I am trying to install a new "Valtek" timing chain tensioner with
out removing the engine from the bike. I have the engine and frame blocked
up and the front cover off and the chain exposed.

1st ?......After removing the bolts for the old tensioner can I just leave
them out or must they be replaced and if so do I need to find shorter
bolts?

2nd ?.....The chain appears to be in good shape, but I assume that it must
come off to get the old tensioner out. Is that correct or is there a trick
to getting the old one out?

3rd ?......I used the generator pully flange to hold the crank while
removing the nut that holds it on. I bolted an aluminum bar to the case and
one of the flange bolts and it held the crank solid. Can I do the same
thing
to get the cam sprocket nut off?

4th ?.....Any special instructions for installing the new tensioner? This
is
 my first "Valtek" chain tensioner.

Thanks for any help I can get.
