Well I wrote that from work. When I got home today, I checked Guzziology.
Sure enough, Loopframes are different from later Guzzis. On my later
Guzzis the dipstick IS read fully screwed in. Loops are screwed in 1
thread, like you fellers said. Just when you think you got things figured
out. There is a good chart in the book on dipstick dimensions. According
to Dave R., the dipstick for Loops ought to measure 62mm from the gasket
surface to the full mark and 99mm to the low mark.

Got to go stuff ready for Mid-Ohio. Oh yeah, I use 20-50 Castrol too.

 Hey Darrell,
You don't want to screw it all the way in. Like Mike said, 1 turn or
top
thread. Of course make sure the bike is level.
See you at mid-ohio

One thing is to consider how you check it. On most bikes the
correct way

With
Guzzis, I think you are supposed to screw it down tight against
the
gasket and remove it. That makes a big difference. I also think
the
"rated" capacity is 3 litres or 3.17 quarts. I usually put 3
quarts in
mine. I don't run mine as hard as Ken, though.

 Hey Ken,
3 quarts exacly puts mine at the half way every time. Wonder why
the

differance, differance in dipstick markings? hmmm....

I run Castrol 20/50 & measure in 2.5 quarts, which puts the oil

 level about
half way between the low & high mark on the dip stick. Guzzi's
don't

 like
running with the oil level up near the high mark, in my
experience

 any oil
above the half way mark just gets blown out the crank case
breather.
